After graduating 6th in her law school class, Merle practiced law in a corporate setting and in private practice in Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, Missouri. In 1987, she earned a Master of Laws degree (Tax) from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri. From 1987 &ndash; 1995, Merle worked for the U.S. Department of Treasury, and the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.
